Debbie Ryan and Debbie Ryan Mosaics

Debbie is 08 businessconnect's selected artist to decorate our own Superlambanana.

What is your business?
Debbie Ryan Mosaics specialises in creating contemporary mosaics and running educational workshops. I am a fine Art Graduate with an extensive background in running community projects and exhibitions. I have created a variety of commissions for a number of schools, organisations and businesses. Her mosaics can be found in a variety of forms, in gallery spaces, restaurants, gardens and walking trails.

Why did you start it?
Ever since I was little I liked the idea of being an Artist, creating artworks for people to enjoy. In 2006 I decided to take the plunge and start my own business. I knew that it would be a lot of hard work, but thought in the long run I want to be my own boss. I decided to run workshops alongside creating artwork as I enjoy teaching people new skills, and like the fact that everyday is different with each project I’m working on.

What did you do before it?
In 2002 I graduated in Fine Art, originally as a painter. As a graduate I realised I needed a lot more skills. I went on to do a variety of courses, some in running your own business. I then got a placement with a company that taught me mosaics. After this I went back to working full time in a bookshop. I created my Artwork in my spare time, and then in 2006 decided to go for it, and set up my business.

What makes you unique?
Quite simply, me personally make my business unique. I am very passionate about what I do, and create. I would like to think that my artwork speaks for itself. I really enjoy making mosaics, and feel very lucky getting up and doing what I do everyday.

What are your plans to make the most of Capital of Culture?
I am working on several projects in Liverpool, creating artwork for a new health centre, completing a mosaic walking trail in Halewood, and creating a large mosaic panel with some young people that will be going in the Museum of Liverpool, once opened. Also, I’m hoping to get a large exhibition space to display a series of mosaics that I’ve been working on, for the Liverpool Biennial in September.

Any tips?
Work hard and true, and most importantly - enjoy!
